Imperfect Substitutes: Immigration and Consumer Preferences

An interesting story in the business section of today’s New Zealand Herald:

Tucked down the bottom was this comment below plucked from Burger Fuel’s annual report. It sounds like immigration is altering Burger Fuel’s traditional customer base. I really hope they adapt because I think their food is delicious (… says the Burger Fuel consumer who’s immigrated to New Caledonia …)

As a side note, Happy Independence Day to the United States of America 🙂

Addendum:

Takeaway companies’ products are imperfect substitutes for each other which is why takeaway companies are in competition with each other. So Burger Fuel, KFC, McDonalds, Burger King, and Hell’s are all targeting approximately the same customer base. Burger Fuel’s comment about experiencing a shrinking traditional customer base not being perfectly replaced by new immigrants who have different consumer preferences, is probably also being experienced by all of these other firms.

That’s why it was interesting to see this email materialise in my inbox this morning…

I hope Burger Fuel does the same.
