Every Economist marvels at Singapore’s economic and political economy. They’ve just entered into a Free Trade Agreement with Kazakhstan and their Senior Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, delivered a lecture to the Nazarabayev University of Kazakhstan outline Singapore’s economic development history and economic strategy.
It’s worth reading.
You can see echoes of their strategies in some of the things New Zealand is doing or did. For example, we too had “Tripartite” relationships between unions, DHBs and the government under the previous DHB system of healthcare. It led to fractious employment relationships, and very expensive health care with no productivity growth from DHBs for probably two decades. Unlike Singapore who were able to successfully use them for economic development, in New Zealand’s case they became pathways for wage bloat, increased health care waiting times, high DHB financial deficits, and were a textbook example of economic industry policy mismanagement.
